After nearly 6 years as just another dusty old travel blog
taking up web space, we’ve decided to revive Winging It On Two Wheels and share our
travel experiences with anyone who wants to follow along. Our last trip is still here; a dozen or so
postings about our ride from Barcelona to Banjul (The Gambia) if you’re interested. Any fellow cyclists or travelers who stumble
on this blog and are heading that way or along our future path can ask us
questions about the route if they have them.
We plan to keep a similar format, sharing an overview of how each
portion of the trip unfolds, either chronologically or simply focusing on
interesting or out of the ordinary experiences we have. It may be split up by country or a couple of countries. We’ll do our best to keep it interesting and
include a few of the better pictures, though we’re not writers or photographers. Also, in the sidebar, there’s a map which
tracks our movements using our Garmin Inreach device. If on a touchscreen scroll with one finger and
zoom in and out with two.
For this ride we’ve decided to start with pedaling across
Iceland in October! It’s a happening
tourist destination right now but most of all we want to take the somewhat
famous ferry from Iceland to Denmark with a stopover at the remote Faeroe
Islands. From there the intent is to
cycle south towards Greece. Our overall
plan is vague and open with no master goal, just a few ideas of what we’d like
to see. We’ll be cycling through Europe
in winter, so a lot of our destination choices will hinge on how the winter
unfolds. A harsh winter will limit our options while a mild winter will open
more doors. Like our last tour, we’ll keep going for as long as we’re happy
pedaling with the motivation to press on.
When it’s no longer fun, we’ll be on the next plane home.
From here on out we’re just wingin it, making miles on our
bikes during the day and figuring out places to sleep as we go. We’ll go where the weather is manageable and
the sights, people and/or history is interesting, making most of those
decisions along the way.
